THREE PHASE EVENT May 21-22, 2011
RULES
Qualifying Horses: All horses must be 3 years of age or older according to their actual date of birth. Must have a current coggins and travel papers. As strong advocates for sound horses, only bare foot or flat shod shoeing is permitted. No artificial devises are permitted. All horses must go through a vet check prior to competing. Any foreign substances or other cruel, unsafe and/or unsportsman like practices will be grounds for disqualification. A horse may have only one rider and may be entered into only one division of choice (beginner novice, novice or training). A rider may chose to ride more than one horse, but due to scheduling constraints, no more than three horses may be entered under one rider.
Starting Order: The starting order will be determined by draw after the close of entries. A rider competing with more than one horse must indicate on the entry form which horse will be ridden first. Rides will be scheduled with adequate spacing between starts. Approximately one week before the event, the riders will be mailed (if postage paid envelope is attached with entry form) or emailed their course and their riding times for each phase of the event.. Courses will also be posted at the event.
Schedule: The Three Phase Event Dressage and Stadium Trail Obstacle tests will be conducted on Saturday unless the number of entrants warrant test on Friday as well. The Three Phase Cross Country course will be held on Sunday.
Identification: Each horse will be given an individual number and the horse must wear its number whenever it is being exercised or is competing.
SCORING PROCEDURE The event is composed of three phases. Each phase starts with 100 points, total starting value of 300 points. The competitor with the fewest deductions, therefore the highest total points, is declared the winner. Scoring Dressage: The tests used in this event are official USDF, USEF and NWHA tests where the trot has been replaced by the natural gait of the competing breed of horse. Event tests for the beginner novice, novice and training dressage tests may be found under the "dressage tests" located at top of page. Those wanting to compete additional tests may obtained them by going to the NWHA web site at www.nwha.com. Each test has a maximum possible points (MP). Each horse will receive points based on performance (PP). The performance points are divided by the maximum points to obtain the percent score (PP divided by MP to obtain % score) The percent score will be the score that is carried forward as a plus score ( i.e 66% will go forward as +66) and becomes the score of the dressage phase.
Scoring Stadium Trail Obstacle: There will be 10 obstacles, each assigned ten (10) points.
Each error on the course including failure to follow the course pattern will be penalized as follows: Each tick or pole, cone or obstacle ½ point Hit or step on obstacle, minor break in gait 1 point Skipping over or failing to step into required space 1 point Slip pole 1 point Knock down, step out or jump off bank 3 points Drop object 5 points Loss of control at gate 5 points Each refusal or evade (max 3 per obstacle) 5 points Judge waves horse off obstacle after 3 refusals 5 points Obstacle performed in the wrong direction 10 points By pass obstacle 20 points
The final score for the Stadium Trail Obstacle will consist of the maximum points (100) less the accumlated penalty points (for no more than 100 total). There will be a 10 point bonus for those ridden on a snaffle bit. This becomes the score of the stadium obstacle phase.
Cross Country: The obstacles will be natural in design such as one would experience on a trail ride, including mazes through the woods, logs, rocks and water crossings. The distances will vary from two to five miles. The emphasis here is not so much on the obstacles but a good ride through the country side where the horse is required to willingly traverse the obstacles, allow the rider to accumlate the required tags and complete the course in the ideal time window. Horses will be checked at the end of the course by a veterinarian for fitness and recovery time.
Scoring Cross Country: The course will consist of ten (10) course obstacle destinations with buckets and tags. Each tag has a value of ten (10) points. Each missing tag’s value is deducted from the total score at the check in. The riders will ride against an ideal time. The ideal time is one (1) minute. A horse arriving at the check in station within the 60 second ideal time window will receive twenty(20) bonus points. A horse arriving at the check in sooner then the ideal time, will incur a penalty of five (5) points for each 30 seconds sooner for a maximum penalty of fifty (50) points. A horse arriving in more than the ideal time will incur a penalty of five (5) points for each 30 seconds over the ideal time for a maximum penalty of fifty (50) points. A rider attempting to adjust his finish time when arriving early by halting, circling or doing serpentines will be penalized 25 points
Cross Country Score: Ideal time window bonus points or penalty deductions, and missing obstacle destination tag deductions becomes the score of the cross country phase
TOTAL SCORE FOR EVENT: The cross country score is added to that of dressage and stadium trail obstacle for a total score for all three phases.
